A mission to succeed
Sun Tzu wrote in “The Art Of War,” “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before the defeat.”
Objectives, strategy and tactics often get used interchangeably. Objectives are what we want to accomplish and how we will measure success when we get there. Strategies are the approach we will take, a plan of action. Tactics are things we can touch and feel, our techniques to implement our strategies.
OPUBCO Communications Group has many objectives to accomplish in the coming years. Many of them can be measured in monetary terms, but not all of them.
How do you put a revenue figure on influence, service to the community, or passion for what you do? As part of our strategy, there are intangibles. Called by one the commenters on the article, “captain obvious,” Loic Le Meur’s Ten Rules For Startup Sucess were outlined in TechCrunch. I saw Loic Le Meur at Web 2.0 in SF last year, he sat on a panel session about video business models. He demonstrated seesmic there.
There are some of his rules I would agree with and some not so much. Remember, “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before the defeat.” There is however, something to be said for getting out of the mature business model mindset.
And, some of the spirit of his list is very applicable: don’t hesitate, don’t obsess and listen to your customer. That is a different midset for a mature business, but one that is essential to longterm success of emerging business models.
